Sonex Aircraft is back — under new ownership, with new energy, and the same legendary engineering that put thousands of homebuilts in the air. The factory runs. The kits ship.
In March 2026, Sonex LLC announced it was closing its doors. That announcement shook the homebuilding community. Then something happened that changes everything.
Sonex has been acquired by On Capital, led by Stephen Osborne. Mark Schaible — the engineer behind the Highwing and decades of Sonex innovation — is staying on as Director of Engineering.
Kits are shipping. Orders are open. The factory is running. This is not a salvage story. This is a rebirth.
"The Sonex mission hasn't changed. Affordable, proven aircraft that real pilots can actually build and fly. We're just getting started."— Stephen Osborne, Owner & CEO, Sonex Aircraft LLC

While other high-wing kits focus on backcountry utility, the Sonex Highwing stays true to the Sonex mission: sleek, efficient, aerobatic cross-country performance.
No struts to obstruct the view. Clean, efficient wing design maintains Sonex aerodynamic performance while opening up dramatic visibility from the cockpit.
First flight June 30, 2025. Piloted by advisory board member Joe Norris. Performance and handling exactly as designed — "handles beautifully as predicted, like a Sonex."
Large doors with exposed foot well for easy ingress/egress. 42-inch interior width seats two adults without shoulder contact. Fold-down seats for baggage area access.
Successful static load test of horizontal tail section before production began. Full-span wing tip testing delivered outstanding results. Sonex never ships what it hasn't tested.
Designed to meet MOSAIC Light Sport Aircraft standards. Safely within limitations of even the proposed new MOSAIC Sport Pilot rules, with and without full-span wingtips.
The Sonex Highwing is capable of aerobatics with two persons on board — a standard that most kit aircraft simply don't meet. This is a Sonex. It performs like one.
"Performance and handling proven to be exactly what we expected. Crisp, solid and predictable in all phases of flight. The Highwing handles beautifully — like a Sonex."
Be among the first Highwing builders under new ownership.
Nobody can deny that every pilot's fantasy is to own and fly a jet. The SubSonex makes that fantasy real. The $100 hamburger never tasted so good.

Defense contractors, government agencies, and research institutions — let's discuss how Sonex Aerospace can accelerate your program.
Since the late 1960s, Sonex has stood for affordable, proven aircraft that real people can build and fly. Under new ownership, that mission continues — stronger than ever.
Providing innovative, cost-effective, and efficient aircraft kits, powerplants, and accessories — supported by industry-leading customer service. Sonex leads the homebuilt community in protecting experimental-amateur built rules and cultivating new pilots.
To continue the Sonex Aircraft heritage of Product Innovation, Affordability, Simplicity, Versatility, Performance, Engineering, and Quality — and to expand these themes into a broader aviation marketplace under growth-focused new ownership.
Under On Capital ownership, Sonex commits to investment in production capacity, product development, and community support. Kits ship. Factory runs. Engineers stay. No disruption to builders in progress — only acceleration.
Three generations of Sonex leadership — the founder who started it, the engineer who advanced it, and the new owner taking it further.
John Monnett began his aviation design career in the mid-1960s when a teacher's salary couldn't cover a $10,000 airplane. He built a VW-powered aircraft for $600 instead — it made the cover of Popular Mechanics in May 1968. That ethos — maximum performance per dollar — became the foundation of everything Sonex would become. He created the AeroConversions engine line, the SubSonex personal jet, and a design legacy spanning five decades.
Mark Schaible served as Owner and President of Sonex LLC and is the engineering force behind the Sonex Highwing — which achieved first flight under his direction on June 30, 2025. As the lead designer and chief institutional knowledge holder, Mark is staying on under new ownership as Director of Engineering. His retention is non-negotiable and a direct signal: the engineering continuity is intact.
Stephen Osborne is the new owner of Sonex Aircraft LLC through On Capital. A commercial general contractor, Stephen brings operational discipline, capital structure, and the drive to take Sonex from distressed to dominant. His acquisition includes Sonex Aircraft, AeroConversions, and Sonex Aerospace — the full asset stack. His goal: keep what works, invest in what grows, and build Sonex into a $100M+ aviation company. This acquisition is also personal — Sonex holds a connection to Stephen's late father.
